The Law Strictly Regulates
Debt Collectors
When a consumer notifies a
debt collector that the debt is
not theirs - for example, the
result of fraud or identity theft
- the debt collector must stop
collection activities and follow
certain procedures.  The law
also prohibits a creditor from
selling the debt.  Debt
collectors who disobey the law
can be ordered to pay you,
and pay your attorneys' fees.
